How to Get a Job in Video Game Development

Everywhere you look you will find people playing games; on their mobile phones, teenagers and the not-so-teens playing their favorite role playing games on their laptops and consoles, and websites offering free apps and games for your tablets.  Video games and everything else under their umbrella have been around for a long time, but with the information age that we are currently in, video games have boomed so fast and so much that there is a large need for video game developers all over the world.

People who play video games sometimes may think that just because they are so good at it means that they are able to create video games themselves.  This may be a good start in building a career in game Game Programming, but you will still need more than just the love of games and expertise in “leveling up.”

Careers in Game Design are high paying jobs.  Many people aspire to be in this industry because of the wide array of skills that can be applied, as well as the many options in this career, path and the progressiveness of the industry itself.

Many people who are in the video games industry started out in the  Video Game Testing department.  They harnessed their love for playing video games into something that is profitable for them and for the video game company they work for.  The main drive of video game testers is their love for video games and their critical thinking skills.

North America may be the central hub for video game development, but other countries such as Japan and China have been in it for a very long time now.  They have developed many of the games that are considered the cornerstones of the video gaming niche.  Also, other countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland and Spain are also entering the video game industry and are beginning to develop video games.  If you want to be a video game developer, you may want to target the above-mentioned countries as a starting point for your career.

Considering the many countries that have jumped in the video game development bandwagon is an indication of how much the video game industry has matured in the last ten years.  As a result, the industry is so competitive that if you want to be in this field, you have to brush up on new skills and the new technology that emerges constantly.  You must be well versed in technology and art, and marry these two concepts together to help create video games that will interest the public.
